Rideshare Apps Guide

For busy families, coordinating schedules can be complicated. Consider getting kids from point A to point B with these rideshare apps that offer child-focused options and safety features.

FOSI is not affiliated with and does not endorse any of the services above. Decisions about the use of rideshare apps should be determined based on agreed safety precautions, and take into account the age, maturity, and comfort level of the child.

*Lyft, another popular rideshare app, is not available to people under the age of 18. Ensure that you and your child are only engaging with services that clearly allow young users to ride, and which specifically focus on their safety.

The popular rideshare app Uber allows parents to work with their 13+ children to create a teen account. With this account, teens can order both rides and food, and parents can follow every step of their journey with live delivery and trip tracking. Uber vets all of its drivers on a yearly basis, and only pairs minors with experienced, highly-rated drivers.

This app caters to kids who don’t have convenient access to a bus to get to school or a school-related activity, such as extracurricular sport and club events. They also pick up children with disabilities, who may need a bit of extra help getting to their destination. HopSkipDrive “CareDrivers” undergo a background check, must have 5 years of caregiving experience, a good driving record, and a car that is no more than 10 years old. The app serves Philadelphia, Washington, DC and Northern Virginia, Phoenix, parts of Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Colorado, Tennessee,  Washington state, and much of California.

Kango allows parents to schedule a ride to take kids to school and extracurricular activities. Parents are also able to book sitters through the Kango app. Children of all ages can use Kango, but if they are under 2 years of age, they must be accompanied by a parent. Drivers undergo a background check, a DMV screening, a phone screening, a reference check, and an in-person interview process. Kango services much of California and Arizona.

This rideshare offers transportation to get kids to daycare, school and extracurricular activities. JumpRydz also offers family pool (a family ride with multiple stops) as well as rides for seniors. JumpRydz conducts regular background checks on their drivers, and drivers must have 2+ years experience working with children, and a car no more than 10 years old. This app serves the greater NYC area.

Rubi Rides offers transportation to any place for children and seniors. For an extra fee, caregivers can also schedule a “driver chaperone” who will escort the passenger to and from the vehicle. Drivers undergo a background check, random drug screening and social media monitoring, driver shadowing, and more. Rubi Rides currently serves the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, and is coming soon to South Carolina and Connecticut.

Many larger cities have public transportation programs that allow children to ride for free or at a discounted rate. If you live in a metropolitan area, you may be able to search these options to determine if public transportation is right for your child or teen.
