On November 6th and 7th the Family Online Safety Institute hosted their 7th Annual Conference in Washington, DC. The two-day event, entitled "Connect. Share. Empower" drew together many of the key themes in online safety and privacy from the US, Europe and Australia. The event took place at the Ronald Reagan Building and featured a wide array of speakers and attendees from around the world.

FOSI was proud to release their own research, conducted by Hart Research Associates, which focused on teenagers and identity theft. The study, supported by Google and Symantec, explored issues around teen privacy and their concerns about the risk of people impersonating them online or exploiting their personal data.

Day one featured presentations from American, Australian and European researchers, as well as panels on privacy, the Internet of Things, the developing world and Digital Citizenship.

Keynotes were provided by Catherine Steiner-Adair, Judith Slocombe, Project Rockit, and danah boyd.

Later that evening, FOSI was pleased to honor the recipients of the FOSI Award for Outstanding Achievement. This year the nominees included Sandy Spavone of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, NBCUniversal for Growing Up Online, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Lucy and Rosie Thomas for Project Rockit, author Rosalind Wiseman, Serge Tisseron from the University Paris VII, Glen Warren from the California School Library Association and Andrea Scheley from Yahoo!.

The second day opened with a discussion with Rosalind Wiseman, author of Masterminds and Wingmen and was followed by a highly instructive panel on international approaches to online safety. Breakouts featured insights into apps, COPPA, child psychology and issues specific to the Latino community. There was also examination of the technology tools available to users, advances in educational technology, the best way to create trust in social networks. Finally, the Conference closed with a great thinkers panel.

FOSI would like to extend their gratitude to all sponsors, attendees and especially the speakers who made this event possible.
