FOSI Asks: What is Safe and Healthy Online Use?

Annual conference convenes top experts in online safety, features new Pew study on teen social networking behavior.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Beginning today, the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) will host its Fifth Annual Conference & Exhibition: “Evaluate. Innovate. Collaborate. Strategies for Safe and Healthy Online Use.” This two-day event, held in Washington, D.C., challenges an international audience of policymakers, Internet industry leaders, educators, legislators, authors, law enforcement, Internet safety advocates, teachers and technologists to explore the science and health issues related to children and the Internet: How can we find balance in our hyper-connected lives? When should parents address “digital drama” if kids misbehave online? What does privacy online even mean? What role does neuroscience play in developing healthy relationships online? Can social networking provide a platform for good?

Majority of Parents Use Tools, Rules to Protect Their Kids Online

Survey shows positive outlook, high awareness of controls on children's
Internet use

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A survey released today by the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) shows that most parents (87 percent) are aware of parental controls and more than half of parents (53 percent) say they have used parental controls for their children’s Internet use. The nationwide telephone survey polled 702 parents of children ages 8-17 who access the Internet and was conducted by Hart Research Associates, an independent research company.

Family Online Safety Institute Shortlisted in 2011 Nominet Internet Awards

Nominet Internet Awards 2011LONDON and WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), an international nonprofit organization dedicated to online safety, has been shortlisted in the Nominet Internet Awards 2011, which highlight companies, charities and individuals in the United Kingdom who are making a difference on or through the Internet.

FOSI has been shortlisted in two award categories: Making the Internet Safer and Opening the World of Knowledge. The Making the Internet Safer Award is given to organizations that create innovative, collaborative responses to security threats, enable people to protect themselves online and educate Internet users about online personal safety. The Opening the World of Knowledge Award is given to organizations that use the Internet to educate others and promote online learning opportunities.
