Family Online Safety Institute Welcomes TELUS as its First Canadian Member

Washington, D.C. - The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), the nation's leading organization dedicated to educating parents, companies, children, educators and policymakers about Internet safety, announced today that TELUS, Canada's fastest growing telecommunications provider, will become its newest member and the first Canadian company to join the organization. Additionally, Andrea Goertz, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer, TELUS, will join FOSI's Board of Directors.

TELUS provides connectivity and technology solutions to its customers while also creating and raising awareness of programs related to corporate social responsibility, empowerment of youth and doing good through technology. A sponsor of MediaSmarts, the company shares the same dedication to helping youth and their families stay safer online through education and digital literacy. As a founding partner of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, TELUS created the TELUS Mobile Safety Series, an online resource that provides information about mobile safety strategies and how to report abuse.

FOSI Hosts European Forum to Promote Commitment to a Better, Safer Internet

PARIS, FRANCE - Today, the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) convenes experts in the field of online safety to discuss the European Union's commitment to ensuring that children have safe and productive experiences online. This event will also explore what the Internet industry and non-government organizations are doing to create a better Internet for kids.

The discussion will center on key issues in the areas of safety, privacy and digital reputation and will highlight the groundbreaking work that is taking place in Europe as well as the United States and other regions. The forum will feature a keynote address from Françoise Laborde, a member of the Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel, who has been active on the topics of children and parenting. FOSI's CEO, Stephen Balkam, will also have a fireside conversation with Arturo Bejar, Engineer Director of Facebook's compassion research team to discuss the work Facebook is doing to develop new safety resources for teens, parents and teachers.

FOSI Hosts Roundtable to Facilitate the Online Safety Conversation in Latin America

Regional Issues in Online Safety are Highlighted at Mexico City Gathering

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - Today, the Family Online Safety Institute will host a roundtable event at Google’s Offices in Mexico City to encourage dialogue in the region about online safety efforts. The event will bring together representatives from industry, government, and the non-profit sector from Mexico, Latin America and around the world to discuss the local, regional, and global challenges in online safety and best ways to promote digital citizenship.

FOSI Celebrates Safer Internet Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) today encouraged parents to use Safer Internet Day as an opportunity to create a better Internet and talk with their kids about ways to have positive and safe online experiences.

"Today is a perfect opportunity for parents and their kids to get together to talk about online safety," said Stephen Balkam, CEO of FOSI. "And once the conversation is started, parents need to stay engaged with their tech-savvy children and explore together the many positive places, apps and experiences online."

Safer Internet Day on Feb. 11th is an international education and awareness-raising effort spanning more than 100 countries. The centerpiece of this year's U.S. activities is an event in Washington, D.C., hosted by ConnectSafely in partnership with FOSI and other online safety organizations. This will feature a keynote address by Senator Charles Schumer, D-N.Y, and panel discussions involving youth leaders and social media representatives.
