For us and fellow students, it’s that time of year again. Whether we’re ready or not, we have to go back-to-school. Summer is just a memory, and it’s time for us to learn some new things. There are a lot of factors you can’t control, but your perspective this school year is up to you. Though our schools are all different shapes and sizes, we’re all pretty much in the same boat – we are embarking upon the journey of a new school year.
Unfortunately, school isn’t always all fun and games. However, it’s definitely not something that should be taken for granted. Remember, school isn’t just about the academics. It’s also about learning to interact with other people, and the way that you choose to interact with others is up to you. Each year you have a chance to decide what role you will take in the little world that is your school. This applies to your social media communities too.
With today’s technology, school drama isn’t confined to the school walls. We know from experience that social media sites aren’t always the kindest of places. The good news is that just by being on those sites you have an opportunity to rise above all of the negativity that may take place, and work towards adding something positive to your Internet community. You choose which direction you go and how you impact those around you.
Can you think of a time when something that someone else said or did to you has affected your entire day? We can. The way that other people treat us definitely has an impact. In the words of the poet Maya Angelou, “...People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” We each have a choice. We can use our words to build people up, or we can use them to tear others down.
We have a challenge for you as you start this new school year. We dare you to make an effort to have a positive impact on the people around you, online and in person. Here are some suggestions for how you can make a conscious decision to have a positive impact on others this school year:
1. Take time to make a new friend – Think about a time when you were lonely or new to a place or group of people. Make an effort to include someone who may be left out. It’s always great to get to know someone new!
2. Help someone out - Do you have a classmate who is struggling with a subject that you excel in? Take the time to lend a hand to someone who needs help. You never know what could come from it!
3. Join a club - It never hurts to be active in your school community. You’ll have a chance to meet new people and work towards a common goal.
4. Start a positive online trend - What if we saw more nice comments than mean ones on the Internet? It’ll only take a few seconds for you to add your two cents worth of positivity.
Whether you’re connecting with people through the Internet or real life, amazing things can happen when you take the time to think about others.
