Startup Middle School: “Build Central” App Idea

Student, Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science

So, ladies and gentleman, I want to announce an idea for an awesome new app that goes by the name of Build Central! Build Central® is an architecture and engineering app that can build designs for anything from complex cars to simple room furniture. The things you build will meet all your specifications because they will be designed just for you, by you. And who knows you better than yourself?

Build Central is a unique app that allows anyone to design anything using their mobile device. Your options are limitless. Our app comes with templates for whatever you want to build, which means if you don’t have experience designing, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. You will be able to design your room furniture however you like, making it as big as you want, or as small. You can also make it as creative as you want or as plain and simple. The most unique feature of the app is the fact that you can post your designs on a blog where you can see if someone is actually interested in investing in your idea. This means your design could come to life!

This app concept came from a middle school class project at the Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science that required students to break into groups and create an app that could solve a problem in today’s society. Our group decided that this app would be helpful because young people have all sorts of ideas for inventions that could benefit their community and eventually be the next "big thing”. However, they don’t always have the means to make their idea a reality. This is where Build Central comes into play.

The cutting-edge Startup Middle School program, directed by Patrick Gusman, presented us with the opportunity to pursue our idea. He has brought many experts in app design, marketing, and independent business into class for us to collaborate with, and to help us come up with our app.People such as our former coach, Patric Taylor, and other people who specialize in marketing and software design also helped us come up with how Build Central would look and function. Currently, we are working with people from the technology company called Clearly Innovative to wireframe our app.

Harnessing all of these resources, our group wanted to promote the ideas of young people because we noticed that not many teens get recognized for their ideas. Our group was interested in building an app because we thought that it was something that we would be able to achieve. It was something new, and seemed like a challenge so we went ahead and took the risk. So far, it has been an amazing experience, and we hope to do even more with Build Central.

We learned that success does not come easy. If you fail the first time, don't just give up and throw everything away. Pick yourself up and dust yourself off and learn from your mistakes. Find out what you did wrong, and fix it. Last year Build Central was entered in the Clearly Innovative competition. We lost, but that did not stop our group from trying again. This year we entered it into the Verizon App Challenge and won best in state. The advice we would give someone who is planning a similar pursuit is to never give up. Don't expect the journey to be easy because it is anything but easy, but it's worth it in the end.
