President

Dr. Lewis Bernstein is the President of Lewis J. Bernstein and Associates, a company he founded, after retiring as Executive Vice President of Education Research and Outreach at Sesame Workshop.

His forty plus year career at Sesame Workshop was defined by his passion to improve the intellectual, social, emotional, and moral lives of children, through media, both as an educator and as a producer.

As an educator, his responsibilities included establishing the overall educational agenda – direction and content - for all of Sesame Workshop’s domestic and international programs, reaching millions of children all over the world – regardless of economic status, gender, religion or culture. This work included developing curriculum and programming to help children cope with both school-based challenges – like Literacy, Executive Control, and STEM - as well global challenges - such as war, violence, migration. He was also responsible for designing and implementing programs to extend the educational impact of media programming into homes and communities, and for measuring the impact of these programs in terms of reach, engagement, and educational effectiveness.

As an Executive Producer, he produced the domestic version of Sesame Street (winning three Emmy awards for best children’s series); Rechov Sumsum/Shara’a Simsim (an Israeli-Palestinian co-production of Sesame Street, honored with the Japan Prize); and the Sesame English series in Japan, China, and Taiwan.

Dr. Bernstein is currently using his expertise and experience advising major foundations, corporations and platforms, on the creation of youth-oriented programs to educate, inspire, and empower youth to work on improving themselves and the world they are inheriting.

Dr. Bernstein holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University in Communications Research, an M.A. from Hebrew University in Communications, and a B.A. from Queens College, CUNY, in Psychology
