Katie is a Professor in the Department of Informatics at the University of California at Irvine, a member of the Connected Learning Lab, and Chief Designer and co-founder of Connected Camps. She has expertise in the design of play-based learning environments and loves to collaborate with youth to develop tools, programs, and spaces that fit their needs and amplify their voices. he is co-leading Raising Good Gamers, a new initiative in partnership with Games for Change. Katie has been leading work recently on integrating strategies to support adolescent wellbeing into esports coaching for teens and she has been developing new approaches to community moderation and governance in Minecraft and Discord. Katie is founding Executive Director of Institute of Play, a founding member of the Connected Learning Research Network, and led the design of Quest to Learn, an innovative New York City public school. Her books include Affinity Online: How Connection and Shared Interest Fuel Learning, Rules of Play, and The Game Design Reader. She has been involved in the design of slow games, online games, mobile games, and big games in both the commercial and independent games sectors and she spends most of her free time playing and building games with her family.
